Viewers of The Crown's upcoming episodes, marking the second part of its sixth and final season premiering on Netflix on Dec. 14, will be introduced to some fresh faces. Among these additions are Luther Ford portraying Prince Harry, Ed McVey as his older brother Prince William, and Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton. The central focus of the new episodes will be on the romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton. Interestingly, before McVey and Bellamy assumed their respective roles, they had already developed a familiarity with each other through an extensive audition process that spanned over six months.

Reflecting on the audition experience, McVey mentions enduring eight auditions during this prolonged period. Bellamy adds that, even before landing their roles, the duo participated in a cast read-through, an unusual but memorable experience. "That was crazy, to not be cast, but you’re still reading these parts," she explains. "You feel like you’re the only one, and then you go back to auditions, and there's like, six other people that look like Kate. So it was kind of like a rollercoaster, it wasn’t traditionally chronological, but it worked out."

The performers agree that the extensive audition process played a crucial role in enabling them to authentically portray the romance that blossomed between William and Kate on screen. Their initial connection occurred during their time at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. McVey elaborates on how he and Bellamy had the opportunity to cultivate their on-screen relationship before stepping onto the set. Consequently, when they finally began filming, it felt as though they were seamlessly immersed in their roles.

Bellamy chimes in, highlighting the importance of numerous rehearsals with the directors. This preparatory work proved invaluable in establishing a strong rapport with each other before the actual acting took place. As a result, when they commenced filming, there was a sense of mutual trust, allowing them the freedom to experiment with and enhance the various scenes.

On the contrary, Ford notes that landing the role of Harry happened swiftly, describing it as a brief process due to its last-minute nature. "It took about three weeks. I stumbled upon it through an open casting call on Facebook, which seemed surprising at first. The whole thing escalated rapidly. I didn't anticipate securing the role, given the show's prestigious reputation."

Ford elaborates on his approach to portraying Prince Harry, a character characterized as a bit of a rebel compared to William. Despite lacking formal acting training, he found support in the experienced returning cast, including Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, and Dominic West, who portrays Prince Charles.

"Considering my non-traditional background without drama school, slipping into the role was surprisingly easy," shares the actor. "Stepping onto The Crown set for the first time might make you feel like an outsider initially. It takes time to feel integrated into that environment. The caliber of actors on The Crown is astounding. However, it felt quite natural to me. I could observe from the sidelines, and it felt right. I enjoyed that. Just observing."

The first part of The Crown Season 6 is currently available for streaming on Netflix, with the second part set to debut on December 14th.
