The recipient of five Grammy awards made a stunning, unexpected appearance during the conclusion of Sunday's ceremony

Céline Dion, amidst her ongoing battle with stiff-person syndrome, made a rare appearance as a surprise presenter at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The five-time Grammy winner unexpectedly presented the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift during Sunday's ceremony—a significant twist as she had won the same award 27 years prior. Dion's appearance had been teased throughout the night, finally being revealed three and a half hours into the show when host Trevor Noah welcomed her onstage to announce the night's final award.

Expressing her gratitude with a laugh, Dion stated, "Thank you all. I love you right back. When I say that I'm happy to be here, I truly mean it from my heart. Those fortunate enough to attend the Grammy Awards should never take for granted the immense love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world."

The 55-year-old singer revealed her diagnosis of SPS, a rare and incurable neurological disorder characterized by severe muscle stiffness and body spasms, through an emotional video in December 2022. In the video, she mentioned that the condition impacts approximately one in a million people.

In the announcement, she expressed her ongoing struggle with the rare condition, acknowledging that it explained the spasms she had been experiencing. The disorder significantly affects her daily life, presenting challenges in walking and hindering her ability to use her vocal cords for singing as she is accustomed to.

As a consequence of her health issues, she had to postpone performances in the following year. In May, she made the difficult decision to officially cancel the 2024 Courage World Tour dates due to persistent health concerns. In an apology to her fans, she explained her continuous efforts to regain strength but emphasized the challenges of touring, even at full health. Despite the heartbreak, she believed it was fair to cancel all shows until she could confidently return to the stage.

Yale Medicine states that SPS is a disorder affecting both the autoimmune and neurological systems, causing stiffness and spasms in the torso and limbs. Dion has openly shared her struggles with "severe and persistent muscle spasms," leading to a significant reduction in her public appearances. In a recent interview with the French-Canadian publication 7 Jours, Dion's sister Claudette disclosed that Dion has lost control over her muscles.

In November 2023, Dion marked her return to the public eye after more than three years by attending a hockey game at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The match featured her hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens, and the recent Stanley Cup champions, the Vegas Golden Knights. Following the event, Dion, accompanied by her three sons, visited the Canadiens' locker room to meet the players and take photographs.
