Deciphering the Notting Hill-inspired conclusion of Lisa Frankenstein's murderer

Director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody dissect the enigmatic final scene, as stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse speculate on the destinies of their characters.

"Picture this: a girl, standing before the reanimated remains of a Victorian-era boy, pleading for his affection.

In the gripping conclusion of Lisa Frankenstein, Kathryn Newton takes the lead as Lisa, a misunderstood teenager who develops an unconventional bond with the Creature (played by Cole Sprouse), whom she brought back to life using a modified tanning bed.

As law enforcement closes in on Lisa for her involvement in various macabre acts, including the dismemberment of a classmate, she chooses to end her life rather than face imprisonment. Entering the tanning bed, she commands the Creature to raise the temperature until a fire consumes them both. In the aftermath, her stepsister Taffy (portrayed by Liza Soberano) and father (played by Joe Chrest) mourn her loss at her graveside.

Fast forward to a scene reminiscent of the romantic finale in 'Notting Hill', with Lisa miraculously alive, though her head is swathed in bandages, reminiscent of a mummy. Astonishingly, the Creature, previously mute except for occasional grunts, now speaks fluently. He sits by Lisa's side, reading to her, echoing the dynamics of the bookstore owner and actress from the 1999 rom-com. But how did the Creature gain the power of speech? And what fate befell Lisa after the fiery incident in the tanning bed?"

"According to writer Diablo Cody, it's evident that at some point, they managed to acquire a tongue for him. This leads me to believe that they might have committed even more dreadful acts in the meantime.

Regarding Lisa's fate, director Zelda Williams confirms her demise. "That's why they buried a body. However, if you observe closely, the gravestone, now situated in Diablo's yard, bears a lightning strike. This suggests that Creature took care of her grave until lightning struck it, resurrecting her. So now, Lisa's become the monster, and Creature is the one tending to her."

What follows remains uncertain. "I prefer leaving things open-ended and ambiguous," says Cody. Nonetheless, the main stars have their own interpretations. "In my view, we've assembled the man, he now has all the necessary parts, and he's going to reassemble her. Then, they'll wander the earth, continuing to gather more parts and causing chaos," Newton suggests. "And perhaps start a band."

"Definitely," Sprouse agrees. "The band idea."

"And we'll only travel by bicycles," Newton adds.

"With oversized front wheels," Sprouse points out.

Lisa Frankenstein is currently showing in theaters."
