The Oscars host disclosed that he spontaneously improvised the moment due to having "a spare moment" at the Academy Awards.

Jimmy Kimmel claims to have been given a quasi-executive order prior to publicly reading one of Donald Trump's social media posts during the 2024 Oscars.

Towards the conclusion of the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night, the host revisited a message posted by Trump on Truth Social, criticizing Kimmel's hosting skills. In a Monday morning interview with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Kimmel disclosed that he improvised the segment when informed he had extra time during the show. However, he was later instructed not to read the note on air.

"They said, 'You've got a bit of time,' and I replied, 'I'm reading the Trump tweet.' They urged me not to, but I insisted, 'Yes, I am,' with a laugh," Kimmel recounted, without specifying who advised against discussing Trump's note.

EW has contacted the Academy and representatives for Kimmel to gather additional information.

Trump criticized Kimmel's comedic skills and hosting prowess, suggesting there couldn't be a worse host for the Oscars. He urged the Academy to replace Kimmel with another ABC talent, referring to George Stephanopoulos as "washed-up but cost-effective."

Kimmel, at the Dolby Theatre, addressed Trump's critique, directly acknowledging him on camera and expressing gratitude for his viewership.

"I'm surprised you're still [up] — isn’t it past your jail time?" he quipped, which prompted an uproar of applause from the audience.
