King Charles, despite a tumultuous marriage with his former wife Princess Diana, harbored genuine emotions for her.
Recent letters uncovered by the Daily Mail reveal a seldom-seen side of the monarch. In these letters, Charles expresses the profound sorrow he experienced following Diana's tragic accident.
The handwritten letter, spanning three pages and dated December 8, 1997, was on Highgrove House letterhead and signed simply as “Charles.” It was reportedly delivered “by hand” according to the Prince's instructions.
Princess Diana tragically passed away in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36.
Written just four months after Diana’s death, Charles described his grief as an “unbearable emptiness” in the aftermath of her passing. In the letter, he offered his condolences to his friend Peter, mourning the loss of “dear Liz.”
He expressed sympathy for Peter’s “agony” and confessed his desire to “wave a magic wand” to alleviate the “bewilderment and confusion” that accompanies the loss of someone so young.
In the letter, Charles expresses his deep sympathy, saying, “My heart bleeds for you, as I can vividly imagine the profound agony and despair you must have endured throughout these harrowing months since learning of Liz’s illness.”
This rare display of Charles' emotions towards Diana is striking, especially considering the tumultuous nature of their separation and his ongoing affection for Camilla, his former girlfriend and now-wife.
Diana had accused Charles of maintaining a relationship with Camilla during their marriage.
