A powerful earthquake on Thursday shook Islamabad as well as several cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The tremors were felt across various areas in KP, including Peshawar, Swat, North Waziristan, Hangu, Mardan, Malakand, Buner, Shangla, Dir, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Kohistan, Abbottabad, and Kurram.

The earthquake tremors were also experienced in several cities across Punjab, such as Lahore, Multan, Chakwal, and Sargodha.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that an earthquake struck at 10:57 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time (PST), registering a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.

According to the Met Office, the earthquake's epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometers.

Today's tremor follows a 4.7 magnitude earthquake that affected Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and KP in June, almost two months ago. Additionally, earlier in June, Karachi experienced a 3.2 magnitude quake. In May, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was felt in various parts of Karachi, including Gadap Town, Katohar, and surrounding areas of Malir district.

Before this, Karachi's Malir district experienced a 3.2 magnitude earthquake on April 24.

It's important to note that earthquakes are relatively frequent in Pakistan due to its location at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The seismic activity in South Asia is largely attributed to the Indian plate's northward movement into the Eurasian plate.
