Priyanka Gandhi Vadra taking oath as Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad

Story so far: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Thursday (November 28, 2024), became the fourteenth member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to serve in Parliament. She took the oath as the Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad after winning the bypoll. The seat was vacated by her brother Rahul Gandhi, who decided to represent Rae Bareli constituency instead.

This marks Ms. Vadra’s debut in parliamentary politics, adding to the political legacy of her family. Currently, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family hold positions in Parliament. Her mother, Sonia Gandhi, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in April 2024, and Rahul Gandhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from both Rae Bareli and Wayanad.

Ms. Vadra’s political journey spans over a decade of active involvement in Congress, but her first electoral victory came just recently. By contrast, Sonia Gandhi has been elected to the Lok Sabha six times (once from Amethi and five times from Rae Bareli), and Rahul Gandhi is a five-time MP (three terms from Amethi, one from Wayanad, and now from Rae Bareli).
