Matthew Lawrence has ignited Hollywood nostalgia with a candid revelation about a young Ryan Reynolds, recounting his experiences during the filming of the 2000 sci-fi comedy, "Boltneck." On his "Brotherly Love Podcast," Lawrence disclosed that the now-superstar Ryan Reynolds frequently clashed with producers and the director over creative differences.
Lawrence recalled, "He’d walk out — just kind of really wanted to do his thing and the producers would get really upset." The production team envisioned a specific tone for "Boltneck," which differed significantly from Ryan Reynolds' performance. "They even told him, ‘Ryan Reynolds, this is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do. You can’t impersonate somebody, you gotta do your own thing,’” Lawrence revealed.
Naturally, Ryan Reynolds did not take the critique lightly. "He got upset" and stood his ground, reportedly stating, "I’m doing my thing.” In "Boltneck," Lawrence portrayed Frank Stein, a science nerd who revives Ryan Reynolds' character after a fatal encounter with bullies. The filmmakers aimed for a dark, "Donnie Darko"-esque sci-fi thriller, while Ryan Reynolds had a more comedic approach.
"There was this major pull between one of the lead actors … so that is what my experience with Ryan Reynolds was," Lawrence explained. "He obviously matured as a human being." Lawrence also witnessed a tense meeting between Ryan Reynolds and the director, noting that the crew, fresh from an Oscar nomination, was less than amused by the actor's actions.
"This crew, I think, had just been nominated for an Oscar, so they were kind of a big deal at that moment. Talk about frustrations on set with actors," Lawrence stated. IMDb lists Paul Colichman and Mark R. Harris, producers of "Boltneck," who previously worked on "Gods and Monsters," the 1999 Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay.
At the time, the crew had seemingly written off Ryan Reynolds. "So much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere," they reportedly said, a statement that is now ironically humorous given Ryan Reynolds' immense success. "They blamed that movie not working on him because they said there was this whole conflict," Lawrence added.
Lawrence shared this Hollywood flashback while discussing Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s legal battle, which reportedly involves Ryan Reynolds. Baldoni has filed a lawsuit against Reynolds and Lively for defamation and extortion following allegations in a California Civil Rights Department complaint.
While Ryan Reynolds is now one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, Lawrence’s account highlights a starkly different period in his early career. This story emphasizes that even today's biggest stars have faced challenges and conflicts. Ryan Reynolds' journey from a "wildcard" actor to a Hollywood titan is a testament to his perseverance and evolution.
