Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court Urges Moon Sighting for Eid ul Fitr 2025
Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has called upon Muslims across the kingdom to sight the Shawwal moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025 (Ramadan 29, 1446 Hijri). Astronomers predict that if the crescent is visible, Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
Shawwal Moon Visibility in Saudi Arabia
According to Arab media reports, the new moon is expected to be born at 2:00 PM on March 29, making it visible for around eight minutes after sunset. However, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) suggests that moon sighting on March 29 is unlikely, as the moon’s age at sunset in Makkah will be just five hours, making it difficult to spot.
In contrast, Suparco predicts that the Shawwal moon will be clearly visible on Sunday, March 30, across Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
Supreme Court’s Statement on Moon Sighting
Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has urged citizens to actively look for the crescent moon on Saturday evening. They encourage anyone who sights the moon—whether with the naked eye or binoculars—to report their observation to the nearest court and officially register their testimony.
When Will Eid ul Fitr Be Celebrated?
The sighting of the Shawwal moon marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid ul Fitr celebrations. This year, Ramadan began on March 1, 2025, in Saudi Arabia.
If the moon is sighted on March 29, Eid ul Fitr will be observed on Sunday, March 30.
If the moon is not sighted, Ramadan will extend to 30 days, and Eid ul Fitr will be on Monday, March 31.
