Rashida Jones Opens Up About Her Exit from The Office After One Season
Rashida Jones Recalls Fans’ Harsh Reaction to Her Role in The Office
Rashida Jones recently shared her thoughts on her short-lived character, Karen Filippelli, in the third season of The Office and how fans reacted to her role.
During an episode of The Good Hang podcast, the Silo actress opened up about her experience and feelings regarding her departure from the hit series.
"I had done a year on The Office and they let me go, which made sense. It made sense," Jones told host Amy Poehler.
Jones portrayed Karen, an employee from the Dunder Mifflin Stamford branch, who found herself in a love triangle with John Krasinski’s Jim and Jenna Fischer’s Pam.
Karen made her first appearance in the premiere episode of Season 3 when Jim transferred from the Scranton branch to Stamford. Their on-screen chemistry led to a developing romance, but the relationship was cut short when Jim broke up with Karen in the season finale.
Poehler acknowledged the difficult position Jones was in, saying, "You had such a tough job there, because everybody wanted Jim and Pam, and then guess who shows up? A very likable, cool... and everyone was like, 'Oh no, wait.'"
However, Jones disagreed with that perception, revealing, "It did not feel that way. People did not like me. Like, fans were not about it."
Reflecting on her role in the storyline, Jones admitted that she now understands the purpose of her character, stating, "I was there to create tension for the relationship [between Jim and Pam] to be earned later. So, I was the third point in the triangle. It's fine. I accept it."
Though Karen’s main arc ended after Season 3, Jones reprised her role in Season 4 for two episodes, appeared once in Season 5, and made a final cameo in Season 7’s Threat Level Midnight episode.
