TOKYO – A tragic medical helicopter crash in Japan has left three people dead, including a patient, her family member, and a doctor. The aircraft, which departed from Tsushima Island in the Nagasaki Prefecture, was en route to a hospital in Fukuoka City on Sunday afternoon when disaster struck.

According to Japan’s coast guard, the helicopter lost communication mid-flight. After hours of search efforts, a patrol ship located the wreckage along with the six people who were on board.

Hospital director Ryuji Tominaga described the incident as “utterly heartbreaking”, reflecting the somber mood across the region.

Among those confirmed dead were:

  • An 86-year-old patient

  • Her 68-year-old family member

  • A 34-year-old doctor

The remaining three, including the pilot and mechanic, were found alive and conscious, clinging to the wreckage in the sea.

Officials emphasized that both the pilot and flight engineer were highly experienced, and weather conditions were not considered a contributing factor. The Maritime Safety Committee has launched an in-depth investigation into the crash.

This tragic event comes just months after a similar accident. According to the Asahi Shimbun, a helicopter from the same operator crashed into Fukuoka farmland in July last year, killing two.
