KARACHI: The city experienced six mild earthquakes in the last 24 hours, raising concerns among residents and officials. The latest earthquake in Karachi was felt on Monday morning, with tremors sending panic through several areas.

Where Were the Tremors Felt in Karachi?

At around 10:25am, residents in Landhi, Malir, Quaidabad, Saudabad, Khokhrapar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and Steel Town reported experiencing mild tremors. A second wave occurred at 11:04am, prompting people to evacuate their homes fearing stronger aftershocks.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed a 3.2-magnitude tremor recorded at 10:29am, with the epicentre near Quaidabad, at a depth of 10 km.

Earlier Tremors & Ongoing Seismic Activity

Two additional tremors were reported late Sunday night:

  1. 5:33pm – Magnitude 3.6, epicentre near Quaidabad.

  2. 1:06am – Magnitude 3.2, epicentre near Gadap Town (depth: 12 km).

According to Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider, these seismic events stem from the Landhi Fault Zone, an area that has historically not produced major quakes, but is still considered seismically active.

Is Karachi at Risk of a Major Earthquake?

Haider explained that while the Landhi Fault Region has not been a source of significant earthquakes in the past, low to moderate-intensity quakes are common. He also highlighted the nearby Thana Bula Khan fault line and Kirthar Range, which lie close to the Main Boundary Thrust, known for periodic seismic disturbances.

“The current fault line activity may take a few more days to settle,” said Haider, “and residents should expect more minor tremors in the short term.”
