Tina Fey discussing the potential shared universe between the two Mean Girls movies

Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall have been employed at North Shore High School for an extended period.

Tina Fey hadn't initially planned to reprise her role as Ms. Norbury in the latest Mean Girls musical movie. However, her decision to once again embody the character with the polka dot top opens up various possibilities for the Mean Girls universe.

"When Paramount approached me about playing Ms. Norbury again, I considered it more seriously if Tim Meadows would join in," Tina Fey shares with EW. "My rationale was that, like my best friend who is a teacher, educators stick around for a long time. So, I could wrap my head around the notion that we would still be there without disrupting the continuity, witnessing the same patterns unfold before us... and perhaps not scrutinizing too closely the fact that the kids have the same names."

In a surprising twist, Meadows returned as Principal Duvall, and the film unveils that he and Ms. Norbury are now married. Fey explains, "They just got married at some point. Tim went to graduate school somewhere along the way, and he's still wearing a cast. That joke is mostly a nod to amuse my old 30 Rock writing partner, Robert Carlock. After the first movie, he used to tease us, 'Your characters really are in love.' So, that joke is primarily for him."

However, if these characters are still enrolled at North Shore High and have had the opportunity to tie the knot, does that imply that this is the very same institution attended by Lindsay Lohan's Cady back in the day? Speaking of which, in Lohan's brief appearance as the Mathlete competition moderator, she delivers a line stating, "This has only ever happened once before," when faced with a tied competition. So, does this suggest that we're still in the same narrative universe, with Lohan reprising her role as Cady?

"I wouldn't scrutinize it too closely. It doesn't fully add up, but it's a multiverse. That's the concept. Yeah, it's a Spider-Man," Fey quips. "I'm not really familiar with those movies, so I can't confirm if what I'm saying is applicable."

Somewhere in Illinois, we hope a local publication is delving into a thorough investigation on how two young women both named Regina George met unfortunate accidents involving buses at the same educational institution.
