The former Queen of Denmark has canceled all upcoming engagements following an injury to her neck and a fracture in her hand.

Queen Margrethe II, who stepped down from the Danish throne earlier this year, recently provided a crucial health update. Lene Balleby, Head of Communications for the Royal House of Denmark, issued a statement confirming this news.

She stated: "Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has been discharged from the Royal Hospital and is now at her residence, Fredensborg Castle."

"Queen Margrethe was hospitalized on Wednesday evening after a fall, resulting in damage to the neck vertebrae and a fracture in her left hand."

"As a result of this unfortunate incident, the left hand is now in a cast, which she will have to wear for the upcoming months, along with a stiff neck collar."

"Queen Margrethe is in good spirits and, under the circumstances, is doing well; however, she will be on sick leave for an extended period."

This announcement also means that the Queen's attendance at several upcoming events has been canceled.

A post on social media read: "Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was discharged from Rigshospitalet today and is now back at her home, Fredensborg Palace."

Fans of the Royal Family quickly sent their well wishes, with the comments section of the post filled with messages of concern and support.

The past few years have been challenging for the 84-year-old in terms of her health.

In February 2023, the royal underwent "extensive back surgery," which influenced her decision to abdicate the throne.

In her New Year's address at the end of 2023, the Queen reflected on her surgery and decision to step down: "[The surgery] went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me."

"Of course, the operation also prompted thoughts about the future—whether it was time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation."

While Queen Margrethe plans to take it easy over the next few weeks, she remains a constant presence in the public eye, attending meetings and public engagements.
