Newcastle’s Isak and Joelinton Secure Victory, Hand Manchester United 4th Consecutive Loss
By M Muzamil Shami
Alexander Isak and Joelinton struck decisive early headers, securing Newcastle United a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday. This marked Manchester United’s fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League and heightened pressure on under-fire manager Ruben Amorim, whose tenure faces mounting criticism.
Amorim, who admitted his precarious position this week, has seen United win just two of their last nine league games. As a result, the Red Devils now languish in 14th place, a mere seven points above the relegation zone.
The Magpies, in contrast, celebrated their fifth consecutive victory, climbing to fifth place in the standings. Newcastle’s dominance was evident early on, with Isak netting his sixth consecutive Premier League goal within the first four minutes. Positioned perfectly inside the six-yard box, Isak converted Lewis Hall’s precise cross, stunning the Old Trafford crowd.
Joelinton doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 19th minute, powering in Anthony Gordon’s cross. Amorim, visibly frustrated, made an early substitution, replacing Joshua Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo in the 33rd minute, a move that received sarcastic cheers from the disgruntled fans.
Manchester United, missing their suspended captain Bruno Fernandes, struggled to match Newcastle’s midfield prowess. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton dominated the aging duo of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Despite sporadic chances, including a missed effort from Rasmus Hojlund and a fluffed opportunity by Casemiro, United failed to convert.
In the second half, United showed glimpses of recovery. Harry Maguire’s header hit the post, and De Ligt’s follow-up effort was blocked heroically by Lewis Hall. However, Newcastle regained control, with their defense nullifying United’s offensive threats.
Marcus Rashford returned to the squad after five games but remained on the bench, while Alejandro Garnacho was introduced to no avail. United’s decline continued, marking their third consecutive home league defeat for the first time since 1979.
Amorim’s woes are far from over, as United face a daunting schedule with league leaders Liverpool next, followed by an FA Cup clash against Arsenal. The year 2025 looms ominously for the struggling side.
