A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Karachi and its surrounding areas on Monday afternoon, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Key Details of the Karachi Earthquake

  • Time of Occurrence: 4:11 PM (local time)

  • Epicenter Location: 75 kilometers north of Karachi

  • Depth: 19 kilometers

Although no damage or injuries have been reported, residents panicked as tremors shook the city.

USGS Confirms Slightly Different Readings

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake registered at 4.6 magnitude with an epicenter 65 km east-southeast of Uthal, Balochistan, at a depth of 10 km.

Previous Earthquakes in Karachi

Karachi has experienced multiple tremors in recent months:

  • June 3, 2024: A 3.2-magnitude earthquake hit Clifton, with an epicenter 15 km northeast of Karachi at a depth of 22 km.

  • May 2, 2024: A 2.3-magnitude quake affected Gadap Town, Kathor, and Malir, with an epicenter 38 km northeast of Malir at 84 km depth.

  • April 24, 2024: Malir district experienced a 3.2-magnitude tremor.
