Abir Gulaal Faces Backlash: Fawad Khan & Vaani Kapoor’s Film Sparks Controversy in Maharashtra
MNS & Political Leaders Oppose Abir Gulaal’s Release
Shortly after the teaser dropped, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) strongly objected to the film’s release in the state.
Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar revealed that they were unaware of the film until its official announcement. He emphasized that they will not allow its release due to the involvement of a Pakistani actor.
“Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state. We are gathering more details and will soon release a formal statement.”
Adding to the controversy, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam voiced his concerns, stating that there is widespread resentment against Pakistan in India.
He further claimed that:
Indian audiences generally do not support Pakistani films.
Even if some viewers watch them out of curiosity, they rarely achieve widespread success.
Pakistani artists should focus on their own industry rather than seeking opportunities in India.
Producer Ashoke Pandit & Film Associations Weigh In
Prominent producer and Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) president Ashoke Pandit also spoke about the issue. In an interview with India Today, he clarified that Abir Gulaal is not an Indian-backed project.
While there is no official ban on the film, he pointed out that:
Producer associations have opposed Pakistani artists working in Indian films since the Pulwama attack.
He urged the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) to review the film’s release.
If Indian producers are involved, Indian technicians will refuse to collaborate with them.
“We absolutely do not support Pakistani artists working in India. We’ve previously issued a non-cooperation policy against those collaborating with Pakistani talent.”
Will Abir Gulaal Release in India?
Despite the growing opposition, Abir Gulaal is currently set to release on May 9, 2025. However, with mounting political pressure, its future in Indian cinemas remains uncertain.
What do you think? Should Pakistani artists be allowed to work in Bollywood, or should Indian filmmakers avoid collaborations?
